Tea and health

A Note to my readers and customers: tea and health

Many tea websites simply list all the “so called health benefits” of tea. While there are definitely healthful properties in this natural, long standing beverage, research on the specific claims are both new and limited. The justification of one study is based on just that ONE STUDY. Don’t just take random statements as fact, read some of the research I have provided below and make a reasonable judgment for yourself. As research changes and claims are justified I will be sure to pass on the information to all the tea consumers.

Modern research continues to support the many health benefits of tea. Tea has been a time tested beverage dating back to 2737 BC. It is natural, affordable and loaded with vitamins and minerals. Despite today’s big push towards green tea, all teas have unique benefits and properties that can help prevent and aid in controlling diseases and illnesses. White, Green, oolong or black, you will not be left disappointed by what it can do for your health and energy levels. Below are some health benefits that have been scientifically proven!

Drinking tea from 100% quality tea leaves is the most natural way to gain the below health benefits.

Prevention/ reduce risk for of Diabetes
  • The Us Department of Agriculture found that green tea lowers blood sugar due to catechins. Certain properties known as EGCG’s in green tea improve the action of insulin thus helping to prevent type 2 diabetes.

Prevention/ reduction of Cancer

  • Years of research on Japanese men and women have proven that green tea lowers the risk of specific cancers such as stomach, breast and ovarian.
  • In 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent

Black Tea

Lowers cholesterol and helps prevent heart attack

Judd's recent study assessed the effects of black tea consumption on blood lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in adults with mildly high cholesterol. He carefully controlled the volunteers' diet and weight. Seven men and eight women were given five servings of black tea a day for 3 weeks and a tea-flavored water for another 3-week period. In a third study period, caffeine was added to the tea-flavored water in an amount similar to that found in the tea.

"Overall, we found a 6 to 10 percent lowering of blood lipids in drinkers of black tea in just 3 weeks," says Judd. What's more, the study showed no effect on high-density lipoprotein, or "good," cholesterol.

The study's authors concluded that drinking black tea—along with following a prudent diet moderately low in fat, cholesterol, and saturated fatty acids—reduces total and LDL cholesterol by significant amounts and may, therefore, reduce the risk of CHD. The study is slated to appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Nutrition

This research is part of Human Nutrition, an ARS National Program (#107) described on the World Wide Web at www.nps.ars.usda.gov.

Adding Honey to your tea can help too!!

Next time you are looking to sweeten your tea think HONEY instead of sugar. Besides providing a low calorie alternative it provides vitamins, minerals and natural medicinal properties. It contains vitamins B1, B2, C, B6, B5 and B3 and small amounts of copper, iodine, and zinc.

Honey can also have natural anti- inflammatory effects which aid sore throats. By adding honey to your tea or swallowing a spoonful you can help soothe your raw throat tissues. It tastes better then Chloraseptic and is healthier too!

And for those who are allergy sufferers, honey can help you too! It is said that if you eat honey that is local to your area, it may help prevent your seasonal allergies. Bees use the pollen from local plants and eventually it ends up in your honey. (Info. Obtained from www.bees-online.com)
